Support Networks

While Seniors and Paws does not provide support in all areas of pet care, we aim to help by offering information about nonprofit organizations that do, or by connecting you with services that meet your needs.

If you're a pet owner struggling to find resources for veterinary care or pet food and can't find the help you need, please write to us with your specific request. We will do our best to assist you.

Emotional Support Dogs and Cats

  • Emotional support animals do not require special training.
  • They are prescribed by a trusted professional who can verify your disability. Be cautious of websites offering "certifications" for emotional support animals.
  • Emotional support animals can be any species that provides comfort and relief from symptoms of a diagnosed disability.
  • They should be allowed in all common areas of your community but may not be permitted in workplaces.

Service Dogs

  • Service animals are trained to perform specific tasks for individuals with disabilities, such as guiding the blind, alerting the deaf, or assisting during seizures.
  • The ADA only recognizes specially trained dogs (and in some cases, miniature horses) as service animals.
  • The ADA mandates that service animals must be allowed to accompany individuals with disabilities in public areas.

  • Reach Out to Us: Write to us detailing your specific needs.
  • We Assist: We will try to connect you with organizations that can help meet your needs.

Note on Emotional Support Animals:

  • Emotional support animals do not require special training.
  • They are prescribed by a professional who can verify the need based on your disability.
  • Beware of websites offering to "certify" emotional support animals.
  • They can be any species and should be allowed in common areas of your community, though they might not be allowed at workplaces.

Note on Service Animals:

  • Service animals are trained to perform specific tasks for individuals with disabilities.
  • Only specially trained dogs and, in some cases, miniature horses are recognized by the ADA as service animals.
  • The ADA mandates that service animals must be allowed to accompany individuals with disabilities in public areas.

By leveraging these support networks and understanding your rights, you can ensure that your pets and emotional support animals are well taken care of, even in challenging times.
